The Gift of ADD

January 8, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Over the past summer I was diagnosed with Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD). ADD is different from ADHD in that the hyperactivity component is absent. Also, ADD (primarily inattentive) mostly affects adults, whereas ADHD mostly affects children. Basically, for me, having ADD tells me why I lack the ability to focus on any one thing for a sustained amount of time.

Being made aware of this condition was like someone turned on a light switch for me. All of a sudden it made sense. Now I know why I get bored easily, I’m super-sensitive, and I lose everything, everyday. It also helps to explain why I cannot stand the thought of doing the same thing over and over again, day in and day out with no end in sight. The only thing that will push me to work for something really hard is if I’m doing exactly what I want to do….for ME.

ADD is a gift to me in my web content production venture, because my interests are varied. I know a little bit about a lot of things, so I have a constant stream of topics in which to write about. Also, another thing that affects people with ADD is the ability to “hyperfocus” on things that are of extreme interest. Sometimes this can be a bad thing because there is no natural stop mechanism, so a person can go overboard. This happened to me as I studied for my LSAT exams a couple of months ago. I was so hyperfocused until I would sit down with my LSAT books from 5 a.m one day until 3 a.m. the next day. On top of that, I would get angry with myself for physically not being able to study longer. It was like this for weeks, it was horrible! BUT, I now know how to control this aspect, so I will be able to utilize this “skill” when I need to write more.

I am extremely interested in Film and Television History, African American History, Personal Finance, Career Choices, Cooking, and Reading, so I will mainly concentrate on those areas. I think I’ll be able to find a lot of things to write about from all of those interests.

**In actuality, Primarily Inattentive ADHD is the correct terminology for what ails me…I just prefer ADD, but it (ADD) has fallen out of modern medical use. For more information on Adult ADD, click here.

2008 Web Content Earnings

January 8, 2009 · Leave a Comment

So, here’s where I stand for the 2008 year without the advantage of Search Engine Optimization, Keywords, or Social Promotion. Keep in mind that I only had two articles from June until October. I did not actively start writing for eHow until the end of November:

So far for 2009, my writing has been zero for eHow, and I’ve written four articles for Associated Content which have earned me the following upfront payments:

I know, this is chump change. But, I have a plan for 2009. The plan is to reach $1000 per month by June and $2000 per month by December. This can be done; I’ve seen it happen – I’ve just not seen it happen so soon…

For now, what I have to do is study. I am in the process of learning about SEO, Keyword, Google Adwords, & Social Promotion Techniques. Once I feel that I have a good enough grasp of these techniques I will go back and tweak my articles. I will make updates to this blog to document my progress.

My ULTIMATE GOAL is to be able to have my writing (web content production) support me through law school, and to be able to NEVER HAVE TO WORK FOR SOMEONE ELSE UNLESS I CHOOSE TO DO SO!

Associated Content (AC)

Associated Content is another one of my writing sites. The residual income is less than inspiring (I’m making about $5 per month), but Associated Content will offer upfront payment for original articles within 7 days after you have submitted your work…this is in addition to the monthly residuals.

Upfront payment with Associated Content is solely dependent upon how much you write – last week I made $18. I can easily make $60 per week on Associated Content if I put my mind to it. You can write whatever you want on Associated Content as long as it is original. I planned to stop writing for them, but I noticed that their $3 – $20 per article up front pay really does add up. So, I’ve decided to continue writing for them. You can join Associated Content by clicking the button below:

eHow

January 8, 2009 · Leave a Comment

My lone eHow article sat from June to November.    I hadn’t put any effort into promoting and monetizing the article because I had no knowledge of such things.  I noticed that Demand Media, eHow’s parent company, had been depositing money into my Paypal, approx $28, account so I decided to take a second look at the writer’s compensation program offered by eHow.

When I completed my eHow investigation, I found that writers were making an entire living writng for them – if they could do it, so too could I.  I stole a little time to write for eHow at the end of November and a couple of days in December. But, I still didn’t incorporate Search Engine Optimization, Keywords, Google Adwords, or Social Promotion because I knew that I could go back later to “tweak” my articles once I learned the ropes. This is where I am now, in the process of learning the ropes in order to go back and optimize my articles for maximum earning potential.

My History

January 8, 2009 · Leave a Comment

One fine day, while I was working as a help desk technician at a major ISP in Atlanta, I was approached by my supervisor and told that my job would be outsourced to India.  Lovely!  Because I couln’t find another job that would pay me what I was accustomed to making, I decided to go back to school.  I scoured the Internet and found that North Dakota offered an extremely low cost of living and really cheap college tuition rates.  So, I packed up my kids and moved across country.

Once I started school (pre-law) I was as happy as a clam — at first.  I think I was just happy to be in school, but eventually, I found that I actually HATED SCHOOL! I was making excellent grades but I was bored to tears.  I began to become depressed because I didn’t really see a light at the end of the tunnel.  I have never liked working for others and I found that college coursework was nothing more than me “working” for my professors.  On top of that, my future dictated that I would spend the rest of my life working for someone else.

I didn’t like what my future held, so I decided to take action.  I decided that while I am in school I will work  ONLY for myself, and once I complete college I will set up a Solo Practice.  I will never again work for someone else.  Through research, I found that I actually can support myself entirely with web content production.
